During the latter part of 1974, with the initiative of the Hellenic communities of Pretoria, Alberton and Benoni, a series of consultations took place with the Presidents / Chairmen of the other Hellenic communities that were established in the area of what was known then as the province of Transvaal, all of which enthusiastically subscribed to the idea of forming a unified body, representative of the Hellenic communities and other Hellenic organizations in South Africa. On the 28th day of November 1974, at Johannesburg the "Federation of the Hellenic communities of the Transvaal" was a reality. In 1976 the federation further resolved to change its name forthwith to the " Federation of Hellenic communities & Associations of South Africa" accomodating all Hellenic organizations.

The establishment of the one and only (to today) Greek Old Age Home, took place in Orange Grove - Johannesburg, in 1947, funded by Greek individuals residing not only in S. Africa but as far as Congo. Today, "Nomeikios Old Age Home" offers accommodation (full boarding), for 45 residents, two qulified doctors, a qualified matron, day and night nurses and transportation. This Old Age Home, is a place to serve Hellenes, with Greek food and tradition.
